A few months back, I was due to catch up with someone who is super important to me and I was dreading it a little bit…
Normally our initial interactions are interesting, friendly and warm, but after about 30 minutes to an hour in it gets super negative and I’m drowning, gasping for air, trying to get outta there!
By the time we’re done I’m so drained I don’t feel like doing anything at all.

Right? So why not get rid of them?
In some cases this would be the perfectly healthy thing to do, when its time to move on, the relationship is no longer serving you.
But what about those people you really care about – the ones you that you can’t or don’t want to rid of completely?
In my case, this is someone I really care about and want in my life, so I decided to take control.
Next time we met up, I set an intention ‘to be enthusiastic and to have fun’. This gave me focus and purpose for when things went downhill. When I found myself bored or drained, I would think of my intention and I would pull the conversation back to something energising and fun.
I began to curiously ask questions about a topic she loves and ask as many questions around it as possible.
She was instantly uplifted and so was I! Not only was I learning something new, she started asking questions about me – which was rare! And by the end of our catch up we both felt great and now we are the closest we have ever been.
The truth is, it is not the most negative or the most positive personality who dominates, but the most emotionally expressive person, that influences the other.
In other words, you can actively choose to uplift yourself and others. All you have to do is set an intention, so that you’re primed for a positive interaction, and ask curious questions – lead the way.
